A Bahrain-based nursing professor is set to play a major role in deciding the future of nursing in the UK. RCSI Bahrain’s head of nursing & midwifery, Professor Seamus Cowman has been appointed to the prestigious Lancet Commission.

The commission is set to review the education, workforce, practice, image and future of UK nursing and provide recommendations on each to the profession, the public and key decision-makers early in 2016.

Taking into account international comparators, the commission will produce a report on its deliberations and proposals which will be published in The Lancet and as a separate booklet.

Professor Cowman said he was ‘honoured to have been asked to be part of a Lancet Commission in the UK’.

“I think this is significant not only at a personal level, but also for the university and indeed for the nursing profession in Bahrain,” he added.

Professor Sameer Otoom, RCSI Bahrain’s interim president, said: “This appointment acknowledges the international contribution and achievements of Professor Cowman in the field of nursing. We are pleased with his recent appointment, which will certainly endorse his role as head of the School of Nursing & Midwifery at RCSI Bahrain.”
