The popular women’s soccer league in Bahrain suffered its first ever serious injury this week when last term’s player-of-the-season Alex Ziegler tore her anterior cruciate ligament, which will put her out of the season, and most of next.
Everybody connected with the league, now jointly-sponsored by GulfWeekly and Citroen and featuring two divisions, is wishing the popular American player a full recovery and return to action.
In the Division One encounter between Eastern Flames and Arsenal Ladies, the Flames played their best game of the season so far. Despite conceding an early penalty, which was converted by Sam Rule, they took a deserved 2-1 lead with goals through Leah Montenegro and Aseel Al Husseini.
Shortly after the restart though, the Arsenal Ladies found their form that has seen them unbeaten in 10 successive games, and they took this run to 11 with goals from Canadian duo Carala Jellema and Lucy Hogg, followed by a brace from the prolific Reema Al Qassab, to run out 5-2 winners.
In the other Division One game, Joga TFA kept the pressure on with a convincing 4-0 win against the Arsenal U21 team who played well but were unable to convert any of their possession or chances into goals, whilst the Joga girls took their opportunities through two goals apiece from Sara Al Aali and Alaa Al Darazi.
On Saturday the Second Division fixture saw unbeaten Seef Dental take on the new girls, Arsenal Gunners, and run out 3-0 winners. Mollie Bednarowski grabbed two goals in an excellent performance, and Sandra Diaz Santos scored the other goal to take the Seef Ladies to the top of the table.
This week sees the season’s debut game for the RCSI team when they take on in-form Seef Dental, and the Arsenal U18s and Gunners clash tonight, while Saturday sees the Arsenal Ladies play the 21s, and the Flames take on Joga.
The Ladies League also welcomes a new supporter in Citroen, who have kindly offered to help support the development of the competition coordinated by Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain, alongside the country’s favourite newspaper, GulfWeekly.
