Members of the media were dazzled by the new Spring/Summer collection at Kenneth Cole in Bahrain City Centre. Imagine funky upbeat music, camera flashes and eyes fixed on the red carpet line-up as models filled the makeshift catwalk down the centre of the store.
‘What is your point of view?’ was the tagline for the collection and brand manager Urvashi Bhat explained the concept: “This new collection stands for urban, industrial life and takes inspiration from the people of New York.
“It is functional and versatile. Everyone is a mini-curator of their own life and wants instant gratification like the social media. It is a play between what is real and what’s not and how you project yourself and how others view you - ‘dress for your selfie’ is the idea for this collection.”
For the uninitiated, or anyone living in a time-warp, a selfie is a self-taken image posted online.
I decided to take a closer look at the collection and noticed retro 1980s Harlem chic with fabrics like mesh, leather and snakeskin. Colours for the collection focused on black and white with bold colours such as canopy green, hot coral and bright yellow.
What I was most interested in was Ms Bhat’s later comments about the price. She mentioned that Kenneth Cole was now considered ‘an affordable luxury’ because the brand has lowered its pricing but not its quality.
