This weeks’ action in the Gulf Weekly/ Citroen Ladies league was kicked off by last season’s Division 2 runners-up Seef Dental and returning ex-champions, Venus.
Seef started well, and were relatively unworried until a superb shot from Lamis Al Saqqa gave Venus the lead.
Ten minutes later, Fatima Mahmoud doubled their advantage with a well-taken effort.
In the second half, Seef came out determined to level the scores and halved the deficit when Sandra Diaz Santos pounced. She was first to a through ball and scored.
Both teams had further chances to hit the back of the net but neither goal was breached again, so Venus extended their winning run at the start of the season to three games.
The Arsenal U21s came up against their club-mates the Arsenal Gunners and recorded what seemed like a comfortable 5-0 win, with goals from Darya Vyshegorodskaya (2), Roqaya Janahi, Eleni Tsappis and Teddy Walton.
However, Ayaa Hassoun, the U21s’ goalkeeper, received the player-of-the-game nomination, showing that the Gunners had plenty of chances but were kept from scoring by some excellent stops.
In the third game, last season’s top two met, and, as always, played a close match. At first, it looked like the Arsenal Ladies would run away with the game against Joga, scoring two crackers in the first nine minutes – a great passing move finished off by Katie Eames and a fine solo effort from Marybeth Sullivan. However, just five minutes later Joga were level after a beautifully taken free kick by Sara Jalal and a fine shot from outside the area by Eman Ibrahim.
The second half was another tense affair, but both of the goals came from the Arsenal Ladies’ Eames who scored following a Melissa Gilbert long throw and a fine solo effort to complete her hat-trick.
The table, after three games, has Venus and the Arsenal Ladies on top with maximum points, the U21s third and Seef Dental in fourth.
Tonight Seef are up against Joga and the U21s face Venus.
