South African Ryan Wooley became Bahrain’s 2014 Junior Open champion after winning the two-day event at the Royal Golf Club (RGC) with impressive gross scores of 74 and 75 to finish with a total of 149.

Bahrain’s Sam Hobday was runner-up with a total of 156 and the prize for best overall nett score went to Abdulla Al Qutami with a total nett score of 142.

More than 45 youngsters competed in the prestigious competition which saw some excellent scoring despite the searing temperatures on Friday and tough, windy conditions on Saturday.

The tournament was split into three main categories with under-21s and under-16s competing on the Montgomerie championship course and the under-12s and beginners playing on the Wee Monty par 3 course. The under-16 competition was closely contested with Yaseen Le Falher edging out Saud Al Sharif by a single shot, finishing with gross scores of 159 and 160 respectively.

The under-12 category was won by Bahrain’s Taimur Malik with an impressive one under gross 26 on day one helping him to a two round total of 56. The over-12 competition was won by Eid Adel Meftah with a two-round total of 67.

“It was fantastic to see so many juniors playing over the weekend - there were some very good scores and lots of potential for the future,” said Bernie Morgan, the club’s director of golf.

“Congratulations to Ryan and all the prize winners and thank you to the Bahrain Golf Association (BGA) for their help with this fantastic event which attracted players from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UK, USA and South Africa.”

The prize-giving ceremony took place in the Repartee dining room where BGA representative Daij Khalifa distributed the prizes.
