Awali Golf Club (AGC) staged its final competition of the 2013/14 season, the Captain vs President Team Match-play, with the captain seeking revenge for his loss to the president in the season-opening President vs Captain Team Match-play held last September.

Having closeted themselves away earlier in the week, with ever-increasing volume as they relived schoolboy behaviour, the two team leaders stared each other down in a battle of wits to single out the players they thought most likely to succeed.

Following the 9-hole, better-ball Stableford contest, the President’s Reds and the Captain’s Whites returned to the clubhouse for the post-golf activities and the results.

Captain Steve Brown, with 11 games to announce, started confidently: 1-up to the Captain, but then followed this with a litany of – mostly – failure for the next six games, the tally becoming, President 5-1/2, Captain 1-1/2.

But it’s never over until it’s over, and the Captain’s side staged an unexpected comeback, winning the remaining four matches for a final result of all-square, 5-1/2 to 5-1/2.

Joyous that at least his side had not lost again, the captain ended the proceedings by making reference to the club’s budget, but quickly regained his sanity and for the last time at a competition in the current season, rang the bell.
