A calm mind for better golf

Compared to many other ball sports, golf is unique in that you have so much time to think between shots. The difference between good golf and poor golf is in part physical, but in a much larger part mental.

There are a number of areas one could look at: concentration, setting goals, course management, anger management, distractions and visualisation. This week I will talk about reducing fear and anxiety on the course.

Talking with students at every level in the game from beginner to pro, a common theme is that at some point during the round they encounter anxiety, probably at its highest on the 1st tee! Telling yourself to calm down doesn’t work, as this just brings your attention to how nervous you are.

I recommend breathing deeply and holding it for a few seconds before exhaling to help you relax. This also subconsciously slows your brain down. In addition, it is important to take in your environment, by being aware of the things around you, such as the feel of the turf – what you hear, see and feel can really help to close out all that internal negative talk.
