Mosaic artist Faiza Saeed’s stunning new collection is now being sold at Moods furniture store in Riffa’s Enma Mall, making her the first Bahraini designer to achieve this feat.
Her passion for art, fashioning unique tables and colourful creations is a far cry from her day job as the head of human resources at Ahli United Bank, but she is known for her skills at putting different things together.
Faiza, from A’ali, said: “I’m very excited to collaborate with Moods. I am a fan of their products and am thrilled that my pieces will be sold there.
“I loved seeing my designs displayed at the store for the first time. I felt like it was the perfect way to showcase how art can be incorporated within a home. The feedback from guests at the launch event was phenomenal. It was beautiful to see such genuine interest in art.”
Faiza creates beautiful images and designs by assembling small pieces of coloured glass, stone, or other materials together in an art form known as mosaic.
After compiling a collection she could be proud of, Faiza teamed up with Moods to offer shoppers a selection of work that can add a pop of colour to any interior.
Art has always been a part of Faiza’s life. Inspired by her artist brother Abdulhameed Saeed, she dabbled in painting and collage making. However, mosaics soon became her passion after visiting museums in UK, Italy and Spain.
She was bit by the craft bug when she picked up a book about mosaics at the Tate Modern in London and decided to give it a try. Her love grew and she began to train under artists in the UK and Italy. Recently, she completed a course in micro mosaics and portraits in Egypt.
After her training, it became her mission to spread the art of mosaics in Bahrain.
Faiza first experimented with mosaics on tables and wall pieces. Eventually she built her first wall installation. Now, she sells her work in markets, at exhibitions and also conducts weekly classes for beginners. She also customises tables for cafes around the Middle East and collaborates with property owners on wall fixtures for their homes and gardens.
According to Faiza, mosaics are also the most durable art form and are capable of withstanding hot summer months as well as windy and rainy winters.
She said: “The great thing about mosaics is that they are so versatile. You can create pieces purely for their aesthetic appeal or you can easily incorporate them into things like furniture, thereby making them functional.
“I love furniture just as much as I love art which is why I like to combine the two to create truly unique pieces. I am especially fond of tables and I’ve made so many that I have trouble finding room to store them all.” The price of her work depends on the size and detail of the piece.
