Humans lie. I lie, as do you. Some of them are harmless white lies, intended to save people from getting hurt – ‘That tie goes well with your shirt’ – to more dangerous lies, which usually end in what I call the ‘vortex of doom’.
I would argue that white lies are not a bad thing, in fact, they may even be the glue holding society together. Telling your colleague that her new, extremely short haircut suits her face or letting your child think that the tooth fairy put the BD1 under their pillow is just kinder than telling them the truth.
Perhaps, in an ideal world, we would be honest all of the time, but in that fantasy the clouds would also be made of cotton candy and unicorns would roam freely.
While I think that small lies are acceptable; the larger, more destructive lies need to come to a grinding halt.
Speaking from my limited experience of nearly 18 years, those larger lies exist to create a divide between you and the people around you. We live in a world where there is often a lack of reality, don’t lie when it counts. It’s definitely easier said than done, but it is worth the inconvenience. Save yourself from the vortex of doom.
