Gulf Weekly Essential make-up tips

Gulf Weekly Camille Jones
By Camille Jones

Make-up is an art and one that I thought I had some idea about, but after being exposed to the heat of the desert and spotting the perfected faces of the lovely women here in Bahrain, I soon realised I was missing something. Why is my face looking like a landslide at midday whilst others over here are still sitting pretty?

I needed to rectify this, therefore, I started a little research and through word-of-mouth found 35-year-old Jennifer Perrin, pictured below, from Los Angeles, who happens to be a well-known make-up artist working here in Bahrain.

She carries out freelance stylist work and has just finished working with two reality TV shows, Hayat Khawat and Blending in with the Bahrainis.

I sat down with her to get up-to-speed with the latest trends and to open the door to the expert world of make-up.

When asked about the common error women make when applying make-up, she said that the foundation colour they choose is often by far the worst mistake.

I am sure you ladies have seen the poor soul that looks like she is wearing a mask? You can see a strip between the edge of the chin and her neck? This is due to the wrong type of foundation for her undertone.

Some women may have a pink, yellow or neutral undertone and need to select the correct make-up accordingly.

If you have slightly yellow or golden skin and are using a pink undertone then you will end up looking orange which is one of the most common mistakes she finds in Bahrain.

She stressed that she uses professional products and luckily in Bahrain there are so many options including Mac, Bobbi Brown, Chanel and Armani.

She explained: “Due to my experience, I do not like to waste money with the cheaper products because I end up using more because of the poor quality. Spend a little more money to get a product that lasts and you will receive the best results.”

What Jennifer understands is that women’s make-up needs vary according to the situation and role in their life.

There are mums that need a quick 10-minute morning routine before that early ‘school rush’ so that they are looking awake and not scaring their own children.

Later on in the day the look may need to change for a coffee morning, event with their hubbies or for a ‘ladies night out’. Business women may use a more sophisticated, refined look without overdoing it and showing up ready for the red carpet.

Jennifer will be offering her services every evening at the Beauty Spot Salon in Hamala from 3pm to 9pm. Also, every month she will hold introductory make-up classes from 6-8pm stretched over two nights.

You can book private sessions as well with her and she will tailor your routine, show you what products to buy and even take you shopping to help purchase them. She found that shopping with a client really helps because some women will take a class and then spend a lot of money on the wrong type of products.
