The GulfWeekly Ladies Football League continued this week with a clash between the top two title contenders, Arsenal Ladies and Arsenal U21s.
The U21s started in the same vein as the week before, trying to defeat another of the historically major teams, and when Lamis McDowell Rose latched on to a loose ball in only the third minute and smashed home the opener, it looked like another upset might be on the cards.
The Ladies, however, had other ideas though, and despite the youngsters creating several chances, the Ladies scored five unanswered replies, with ex-U21 star Eleni Tsappis scoring a long range free kick, Sam Rule notching a hat-trick and an unfortunate own goal.
The youngsters’ disappointment , however, was short lived when Aya Ashraf, Dana Tarif, and Latifa Al Khalifa were invited to joined their colleagues Phoebe License and coach Deena Rahman in the Bahrain Senior National team for the match against Pakistan and all made their debuts in a convincing 5-0 victory.
This is a great testament to the league’s status, which has given these players a competitive platform to perform on a weekly basis and develop their talents.
Also in action were Venus and Seef Dental. A difficult to beat Seef side put up a great show against their well-established rivals who were determined to get their season back on track after last week’s defeat.
The game was very even throughout, with chances at both ends thanks to some solid work by both defences, but eventually Venus found a way through with a superb strike on the volley by Lamees Saqqa, which turned out to be a worthy winning goal.
This week’s matches see the U21s play RCSI and another top table clash with Venus taking on the Arsenal Ladies.
