Once my students have a sound technique and understanding of all the departments of the game, it’s time to introduce them to the golf course.
One of the first things a student notices on the course is that it’s not flat compared to the practice range. The more we play, the greater our understanding of what happens to our shot off different kinds of slopes.
Here is the general rule of what happens on the four most common slopes.
* On an up slope the ball will fly higher and roll less on landing, so use extra club.
* On a down slope the ball will fly lower and run more, so use a higher lofted club than normal.
* When the ball is above your feet it will swing in the air from right to left for right-handers and the opposite for left-handers, so adjust your set-up line accordingly. The swing is made flatter by the slope, meaning the player will naturally hit more of a draw shot.
* When the ball is below the feet the swing becomes more upright, producing a left to right flight for right-handers and the opposite for left-handers.
