Muscular Mohammed Awadhi put his strength to the test over the weekend in a fitness challenge competition and picked up a prize for his push-up prowess.
The 26-year-old insurance surveyor was one of 14 athletic buffs participating in the Kinetix Health Club challenge which featured competitors completing as many gruelling floor exercises as possible, including push-ups, planks and crunches, for cash prizes at the Elite Seef Residence & Hotel.
Awadhi, an avid gym-goer who trains six days-a-week at the Elite Crystal Hotel in Juffair, impressed the certified Elite Group trainers as well as bodybuilding champion Sami Al Haddad with his strength and endurance after performing 86 push-ups.
Awadhi, from Arad, said: “Originally, I had entered the competition just for fun and I didn’t think I was going to win. I figured if I did, well, that would be great, but I didn’t expect anything.
“During the event, the judges asked us to do as many push-ups, planks and crunches as possible. The one who did the most would win.
“Normally, I complete three sets of 20 push-ups as part of my exercise routine. I figured that was where my strength was but I knew I had to push it if I wanted to be number one in that exercise category.
“I am really happy to have won. I only went back to the gym two-and-a-half years ago. I have always been athletic and loved sports, which is why I thought going to the gym would be a great way to get fit again. Winning this competition proves that I’m achieving that goal.”
Awadhi walked away with BD200 and treated himself to a shopping spree.
Two of Elite Seef Residence & Hotel’s tenants also snatched up BD200 each for their prolific performances. Andy Friederich mastered the plank in four minutes and 54 seconds and Austin Kendrew accomplished 69 half-up crunches.
Santosh Laxman, a supervisor at Kinetix Health Club, is proud of his gym members’ efforts. He said: “This event was made to raise awareness and determine how fit a person truly is by completing a number of tasks.
“It gives the individual an idea of what level he or she is at and what needs to be improved upon. It was great to see that the winners are members of our gyms. This in itself is a win for us because it shows that they are working hard to become healthier and we are ensuring that they achieve their fitness goals.
“Kinetix has always been dedicated to improving our members’ health and strengthening their core.”
The popular health facility, which staged the event, features top of the line equipment from Technogym. It is located on the sixth floor of Seef’s 171-room property overlooking a large swimming pool, kid’s club, grill area and restaurant.
The Kinetix Health Club’s monthly gym membership is BD50 and one-hour sessions with a personal trainer cost BD10. The club is also featuring a one-day promotion on February 14 for couples wishing to get fit together, 50 per cent off on an annual membership for two priced down from BD550 to BD275.
