THE next Cathedral Concert at St Christopher’s Cathedral at 6pm on Thursday, March 26, brings together 13 fine musicians, all who have a passion for brass band music, under the leadership of Lawrence Gargan.

Before coming to Bahrain, Lawrence spent 20 years between Hong Kong and Singapore as Principal Trumpet in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

He started his musical career as a boy in the local Brass Band in Ayrshire, Scotland, and has always had a keen interest in brass band music and a gift at enthusing others.

The other band members come from many walks of life; all live and work in Bahrain, and have performed in a variety of different groups and venues, but this is the first occasion that they have performed together.

There will be a very varied programme from the Swag Masters Fanfare and March by Russel Slate to Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.

Tickets are BD5 and are available through the Cathedral Office. For further details call 17253866.

THIS weekend 250 students from the British School of Bahrain (BSB) and other similarly enlightened schools took part in BritMUN 2015, a Model United Nations simulation par excellence hosted by BSB in the sumptuous surrounds of The Al Areen Palace Hotel and Spa.

Our guests of honour included Rashad Janahi, chairman of BSB, Dr Charles Wall, head of school, Jaap Vaandrager, honorary consul of The Netherlands, Peter Grohmann, the UN resident coordinator for Bahrain, and Betsy Mathieson, secretary general of the Bahrain Federation of Expatriate Associations.

Mr Grohmann briefed the conference brilliantly with a short history of the United Nations and the principles the delegates should keep in view when representing their countries in the resolution of conflicts and the formulation of solutions; namely, love, peace, human rights and development.

Suitably roused, the students enjoyed a hearty breakfast then lobbied, merged, debated and presented resolutions throughout Friday and Saturday as they grappled with issues of import such as world health, conflict in Iraq and Syria, climate change and organ trafficking, to name but a few of the weightier world problems tackled by these intrepid and articulate young ambassadors.

The organisers would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all the BritMUN delegates and their teachers for their support and participation, and to all The Al Areen Palace Hotel & Spa staff members for their superb hospitality and attention to detail.
