Children can now get a slice of the action too on weekend shopping trips to the mall as The Westin at City Centre Bahrain has cooked up a special treat and ensured ‘Fridays are Pizza Days’ from now on at Saveur.

The restaurant has a team of chefs and kitchen assistants at hand to help the little ones create their own dishes, roll out the dough and sprinkle on toppings before delivering them to the kitchen for cooking in the oven.

By the looks on the faces at the launch event last weekend this clever family-friendly concept is going to be a sure-fire winner and give the venue a unique place on the dining out scene.

The restaurant, particularly when under previous hotel management, never really succeeded in establishing it in the hearts of the weekend crowd although the food was fabulous and the service superb, especially when it tried to lure the Friday brunchers.

Perhaps it was down to the location, the restaurant entrance is close to the shops and its neighbouring café so the ‘feel’ was never quite right. But Pizza Days is simply perfect.

Friday is a family day and sometimes parents have to use it as an opportunity to shop. When buying clothes or getting school shoes and trainers to fit, you often need to bring the kids dragging and screaming along … but there comes a time to chill and eat.

Little Stan is 12 and his eyes glazed over when he spotted the mall in the distance but the promise of pizza did the trick.

The fact that the children can now be entertained into the bargain is a blessing as they just LOVE making things!

Donning hats, gloves and aprons the youngsters of all ages took on the challenge with gusto and the selection of toppings they could choose from was impressive.

There are also some tasty dishes with healthy options for the grown-ups too on the menu.

Check out the Whole Wheat Pizza, perfect for vegetarians and those of us on a health kick.

The Calzone Ripieno full of tomato sauce, mozzarella, provolone, veal sausages, beef salami, pepperoni and mushrooms proved to be a dazzling delight and the filling was kept warm by the folded and cut presentation.

The good lady wife Kathryn went for the Quattro Stagioni with many of the above ingredients but featuring veal ham as the meaty addition, plus olives and artichoke.

The Friday Pizza Day experience, from 12.30pm to 11pm, starts from BD5.500++ including one pizza and a choice of beverage – chilled juice or soft drink, or tea or coffee. Don’t forget, the kids can make their own pizza and those under 12 eat for free.
