Gulf Weekly Arsenal squads clinch high-scoring thrillers

THERE were goals galore this week in the Bahrain Ladies League, sponsored by GulfWeekly. With the last few fixtures ending in low-scoring draws the league was crying out for a net-smashing bonanza … and both matches last week delivered.

Firstly, Arsenal U21s were involved in a six-goal thriller. Kia Hanahoe got the scoring underway with her impressive goal-a-game strike rate continuing in the first two minutes. A couple of minutes later Tiffany Murray doubled the U21s lead.

Kholood Ali, however, brought opponents Joga back into the game just six minutes later with a Beckham-esque wonder lob from the halfway line.

The U21s replied with what could be one of the best ‘team goals’ scored in the league with every player taking part in the build-up allowing Teddy Walton to slot the ball into the corner of the net to make it 3-1 at half-time.

The U21s only waited four minutes to increase their lead with a fantastic free kick from Aya Hassoun. Eman Ebrahim did secure a late goal for Joga three minutes before the final whistle but it was too little too late for Joga, with Arsenal U21s finishing 4-2 winners.

The other fixture was a whopping eight-goal thriller between Arsenal Ladies and RCSI. It didn’t look like that at half-time with RCSI going in with a goal from Maryam who scored in the sixth minute. However, just two minutes into the second half Eleni Tsappis scored the equaliser. This only lasted a matter of seconds, though, with Rama Salem putting Arsenal Ladies ahead.

RCSI couldn’t seem to regroup and things went from bad to worse with Arsenal Ladies netting a further four goals in the space of 16 minutes from Alaa Al Alawi, Nada Al Saeed and Alexandra Ziegler scoring two, showing she’s long forgotten her injury problems from the last two seasons.

RCSI did bag another just before the end with another goal from Maryaam, but Arsenal had already inflicted too much damage with the result ending 6-2.

This week high-flying Venus take on Seef, who will be keen to get back to winning ways and put their own title chances back on track. Venus, however, have not lost a game this season and after winning last week’s Rotary charity tournament, will aim to make it a trophy-filled season.

Arsenal Ladies take on Joga with Arsenal hoping to leapfrog Venus if results go their way.
