A tribute book is being launched by one of the kingdom’s most inspirational charitable organisations – The American Women’s Association (AWA) – highlighting its members, past and present, and their dedication to the community over the past 40 years, writes Mai Al Khatib-Camille.
The 200-page archival book, entitled 40 Years of Opening Doors to Charity, Friendship and Cultural Understanding after the group’s mission statement, features stories and photographs of its members’ endeavours.
Lisa Wahba, who has been on its executive committee since 2011, served as president for two years and is now the community service chairperson, said: “AWA is successful because of the contributions of so many women over the past 40 years.
“This book is an attempt to pay homage to the legacy, commitment and sacrifice of those who forged the path that we now walk upon.
“May their stories and contributions inspire readers to reach higher, dream bigger and achieve more. What we are doing today, will hopefully be of benefit to the women who will follow.”
The AWA was founded in September 1974 by seven women with a vision to promote charitable work, form friendships and build cultural understanding amongst the women of Bahrain.
Since then, it has grown into an organisation that attracts more than 250 women of different backgrounds and nationalities, working together to honour the values of its founders whilst continuing to evolve with the times and to take into account the needs of today’s world.
According to Lisa, AWA’s strength has always been the diversity and vibrancy of its members; membership being open to all women who reside in the kingdom.
“Over the years, we have produced cookbooks and directories to commemorate anniversary years but as AWA’s 40th anniversary approached, we knew it needed to be celebrated in a unique way.
“When the idea of a book, comprised of tributes and photos weaving the story of AWA’s history was proposed, the executive committee embraced the idea and quickly sought the necessary volunteers to make it a reality.”
The hardbound book, which is priced at BD10, will be launched at AWA’s May general meeting and luncheon to be held this coming Monday at the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain Hotel & Spa’s Al Khayma. It was made possible by the determination of Brenda Hyde and Dr Sajni Vaidya who chaired the book committee, as well as Janeann Mohseni, Juanita Pryor, Carie Sauze and Lisa.
The committee has also issued a special thank you to Leanne Marshall, Chris Orrell and Diana Wilson for their assistance, along with the numerous other contributors who have added photographs, stories and support along the way.
Lisa said: “The book includes members past and present as well as AWA’s supporters, such as charities, community organisations and sponsors. There are sections on each of the varied activities that AWA has enjoyed over the decades.
“The highlight of the book is the features on AWA’s community service endeavours which illuminate how AWA has continually made a positive impact in our host country. It would be wonderful if AWA could create another tribute book when we commemorate our Golden Anniversary in 2024!”
