Gulf Weekly Symbol of style

GULFWEEKLY’S Camille Jones has an eye for trends and we’ve let her loose around the towns and villages of Bahrain, the malls and the tiny independent outlets, looking to inspire our family of readers.

The white shirt is a wardrobe staple that has evolved throughout history, reinventing itself in new and exciting ways yet resonating as the basic perpetual piece that is pressed and preened to perfection.

Since 1981, Carolina Herrera has been a loyal ambassador of the white shirt and has made it a must-have piece in many of her collections. In fact, it has become a symbol of her personal style, and has become an iconic element of the fashion house, (think Carolina with her pearls and long skirt).

Since inception she has inserted white shirts in all her collections adapting them and updating them every season, demonstrating their great versatility.

The designer said: “They have always been part of my life. They make me feel secure. When I don’t know what to wear, I choose a white shirt. I love them and find them fascinating; and they can be worn in many different ways”.

“You can wear them with or without jewelry, with jeans or with a long or short skirt. It can be worn for special occasions or even for work”.

Always made from exquisite cotton, the brand has elevated the white shirt, giving it an added value promoting it as an inseparable ally.

The ‘White Shirts’ line carries the personal and unmistakable stamp of this iconic brand. An initial collection that will continue to be completed each season with new and unique models, making each piece into an object of desire and a collector’s item for any customer.

Some people shy away from purchasing white shirts because they do not know how to wear it or how to fit it properly. Here is a guide:

Fitting the white shirt:
• For a fitted button-down check to see in a mirror how it looks untucked. It should not be too long and should sit mid-hip. If the shirt is silky then always tuck it in.
• Wear a camisole (undershirt) beneath the shirt for clean smooth lines.
• Check that the buttons are not pulling or ‘gaping’ so that your brassiere will not show. This will indicate you need a bigger size or to unbutton and place a tank top underneath (some places sell double button to prevent this).
• Make sure it is never longer than your suit jacket and collars should stay on the inside of the jacket not flapping open.
• There are great ‘non-iron’ shirts that you can purchase and make sure not to put in the dryer to avoid ‘yellowing’.
• Watch spraying perfume on the shirt and too much deodorant which causes yellowing
• Dry clean the shirt to retain colour, shape and crispness.
• Shoulder seams should be square on your shoulder, not above or below.

Ideas for wearing your white shirt: (Too many ways, here are a few)

• Pair with skinny jeans, black belt and pumps
• Tuck it into a micro-mini skirt with a clutch and wedges
• Match with a pair of boyfriend jeans and sneakers
• Tie the bottom of the shirt for a crop top with low-rise shorts
• Wear it under a sweater with the cuffs and collar peeking out
• Tuck into trousers under a blazer for a classic look at the office
• Leave the sleeves buttoned and pushed up or unbuttoned and rolled up for a sexy look (never to forearm, it looks too casual)
• The truth is that the white shirt will not stay ‘white’ for long and will need to be replaced at least every 18 months.
