Gulf Weekly Write to the editor

I am writing on behalf of two young local athletes, one British and one Bahraini, to seek potential support for them.

The first is Kizzy Price who arrived on the island in August 2014 from the UK and has for the majority of the year competed as a 14 year old. She attends St Chritopher’s School and trains with their swim squad.

She is a junior member of the Bahrain Road Runners (BRR) and three times a week will run with their social or youth squads.

Recently she has begun to train on a road bike in order to begin competing at Triathlons.

Before arriving in Bahrain Kizzy was on the UK talent programme, designed to identify potential athletes for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics and had represented her country at a number of international events at running and swimming, including winning a team silver at the World Championships in Dubai in 2012.

This year she has tried to enter as many events as possible and has had an exceptional season winning just about every event she entered.

Highlights have included:

  • World Biathle (run/ swim/ run) series in Dubai U16 girls (and boys) first place.
  • Bahrain Sprint Triathlon (Ladies 16 to 39 age group) winner (special dispensation to enter as a 14-year-old!) and fourth female overall.
  • Bahrain Challenge Run 2014 U16 winner (including beating all the U16 boys).
  • Ritz Carlton Aquathon overall Ladies winner twice, team winner once.
  • BMI Bank Aquathon won both the adult team (run leg) as well as the youth individual event.
  • BRR 5km race overall Women’s winner in a time of 20 minutes 18 seconds.
  • Schools 3lm Arad Fort runs – won all three races.
  • Bahrain female youth cross country champion.

More recently she has featured in the GulfWeekly and her Google entry has many other achievements. Kizzy has unfortunatly outgrown competition on the island and next year, depending on sponsorship, will be looking to compete regionally. Again, unfortunately, she can neither compete for the UK (distance and unable to take part in their qualifying series) or Bahrain (at the moment) so will have to self-fund many of her competitions.

Her aim for next season is to take part in the World Biathle Championships in Georgia, the ITU Internationa Triathlon in the UAE and, if permitted, the Arab Triathlon Championships. Kizzy would love to compete for Bahrain if permitted and has recently been signed up by Boardman Bikes Middle East who have donated a new road racing bike.

Long-term she still wants to be an Olympian.

Abdulla Attiya is a 17-year-old schoolboy who attends the AMA International School in Bahrain and competes for the Bahrain National triathlon team. Abdulla recently returned from the Arab Youth Championships in Sharm El Sheikh where he came first and became the All-Arab champion. Abdulla comes from a swimming background but over the last 18 months has moved into Triathlon. Over the last 12 months he has represented Bahrain at the Asian Beach Games and at the World Triathlon Series in Abu Dhabi where he was first in the U18 Aquathlon.

Domestically he competes in most BRR and national events whilst training seven days a week.

His aim is to represent Bahrain at the Olympics but to do so he needs to gain as many ranking points as possible in international events.

In order to help Kizzy and Abdulla compete regionally and fulfil their sporting dreams, they are seeking sponsorship from Bahrain and British businesses, be it monetary or in kind, and would welcome the oportunity to discuss personally their ambitions. When not competing for the national team they would willingly display sponsors’ brands on their competition and training kit.

The BSPCA would like to thank all the participants at its Home Alone quiz last week which was a very successful evening with over 50 people attending and 13 teams competing. The overall winners were Dilligaf with 47 points, hotly followed by Cecil’s Dentist and Hell’s Kitchen both with 44 points. The modelling round was, as usual, a riot of fun and the calibre of the models was extremely good with Cecil’s Dentist pipping everyone to the post and two close runners-up: Hot Laser and the Royal Bengal Tigers.

Well done to everyone who wholeheartedly joined in the fun. Thanks go to our sponsors Pizzabella, Al Abraaj and GBI for the prizes, to the Dilmun Club for hosting and their staff for looking after us during the evening as well as our generous donors for the raffle prizes. Photos of all the models and a full writeup of the evening are posted on our Facebook site.

We had a very successful raffle and thank everyone for digging deep into their pockets to support the society. The evening made an amazing BD595 which will go towards the cat house extension fund.

After the previous successes of London, Berlin, Brussels and Paris, ‘THIS IS BAHRAIN’ is crossing the Atlantic to share the humble Bahraini experience with the United States of America.

We will be visiting two of America’s greatest cities - The Big Apple and Capitol Hill. New York and Washington will be the venues for two ‘THIS IS BAHRAIN’ exhibitions and conferences.”

We hope to strengthen the already strong historic ties between our two countries in all areas and to this end we are travelling with around 200 delegates from all sectors of Bahrain’s communities to share our story of the reality of life in the kingdom and to learn from our American brothers and sisters.

The delegates will include religious leaders from Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist and Jewish communities to reflect their right to religious freedom, schools, clubs, societies and associations to reflect the rich history of multiculturalism, several ministries and authorities to highlight the achievements and reforms of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the leadership, along with Shura and Parliament members to demonstrate Bahrain’s democratic processes and a very strong presence from the business sector headed by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain.

The rights, achievements and contributions of Bahraini women will be the focus of several women’s business and social organisations.

The American Mission hospital will be showcasing over one hundred years of its good works serving all communities in Bahrain and the diversity of Bahrain’s multicultural population will be clearly visible as delegates are made up of Bahrainis and expatriates of all nationalities.

Interest is high ahead of ‘THIS IS BAHRAIN’ events in USA with a strong response from invitees and inquiries from various business, religious and cultural societies eager to visit and learn more about the Kingdom of Bahrain and the opportunities to forge new relationships and strengthen existing ties.

Sponsorship and participation opportunities are still available and interested parties can contact the BFEA by email: thisisbahrainglobal@gmail.com or mobile 36556658.
