Are all fruits equal? Sometimes I find myself recommending fruits as a healthy option only to regret it later when I find people bingeing on bananas, mangoes and dates.
Fruits are NOT equal. Some fruits are better for you than others. Just because it’s a fruit, does not mean you can have endless amounts of it.
So, Rule No 1 to know if a fruit is suitable for you: check its sweetness. If it’s very sweet to the taste it means that it will most likely raise your blood sugar levels as well. Limit your intake of the very sweet fruits such as bananas, mangoes, grapes, etc. Have apples, peaches and oranges instead.
Fruit Rule No 2: check water content. The more water it has, the better effect it will have when digested. For example, watermelons are very sweet but their high water content helps make them less harmful. In contrast, bananas and mangoes are too dense.
Fruit Rule Number 3: Limit your intake of fruits to 1-2 servings a day. Although fruits are healthy, too much of them can increase weight and affect blood sugar levels.
Fruit Rule Number 4: Do not eat fruits with a meal or right after. Fruits digest differently from proteins so if you eat them with a meal or directly after they could cause fermentation and bloating. Eat fruits separately.
Enjoy!
