The American Mission Hospital (AMH) in Manama is celebrating double delight and international recognition – providing a boost for a team bouncing back after a turbulent case of internal strife earlier this year, which featured senior dismissals and reappointments and a new board being appointed.
It has recently been recognised as ‘one of the best’ regional hospitals by the International Socrates Committee based in Oxford, England. The committee represents leaders within the international business, education and science communities and awarded the hospital with the certification after assessment and preliminary judging.
In addition, Dr George Cheriyan, CEO of AMH, was also honoured with a ‘Manager of the Year’ award by the same committee.
Although he admitted it was an honour to receive the accolades, he said: “My primary concern is the well-being of our patients. I do this because I love the job, not for the recognition.”
The trophies and plaques were displayed on a press conference table on Monday morning at its main hospital in Manama and the event gave the health executive the opportunity to highlight current concerns facing the healthcare sector such as the rise in the number of cases of preventable diabetes in the community, the challenges of recruiting highly-trained doctors and the cost of providing medical care in the kingdom.
He also outlined plans for a new and larger AMH clinic which will be opening in Saar in the coming months.
The Reformed Church in America co-owns the enterprise, which runs under a government ministry. Shaikh Mohamed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa was recently appointed board chairman and its members now include Hall Delano Roosevelt, the grandson of a former US president and a leading Bahrain-based businessman.
AMH’s mission statement says it maintains a century-long commitment to provide quality, affordable medical services.
