Gulf Weekly On course for charity success

The Royal Golf Club has hosted a new charity golf tournament created by the club’s 2015 Ladies Captain Anne Quintino.

The maiden event, in support of The Palm Association, was described as a ‘great success’ with more than 100 golfers competing in a fun Texas Scramble tournament, with an evening dinner and charity auction attracting around 120 guests.

The team of Rob and Debbie Lane, Mohamed Akeel and Dimitar Zlateviski clinched first place in the tournament with 57 points, which included three FootGolf points achieved on the specially-adapted 11th hole on the course at Riffa Views. Instead of playing regular golf on that hole, all competitors had to sink a football into an enlarged FootGolf cup instead.

Lady Captain Quintino’s team, consisting of Jim Doig, Alex Joannides and Emmanuel Lantzos were runners-up with 53 points on countback while the team of Terri Dowhy, Stacey Andrews, Yaver Rashid and Gavin Campbell came third with the same score.

The winning team members were presented with a Tipperary Crystal trophy provided by three of the club’s lady members.

“I would like to thank everyone for their fantastic support,” said Anne. “We were delighted with the number of competitors taking part and it was great to see children as young as seven out on the golf course.

“Special thanks to members of the Ladies Charity Committee for all their hard work in organising the event, to supporter David Axtell for giving up his time to take some lovely photographs, to Reza Hygiene for sponsoring the top raffle prize of a weekend-for-two to Dubai, to RCSI for providing shirts for all the players and, of course, to all the other sponsors – Big G, Cebarco, Al-Iman Gasket Factory, Hot-Hed, Mrs Q, Na Cailini Deas and Nexus.”

The money, totalling about BD2,000 raised from this year’s golf day, will be presented to The Palm Association, a Bahrain charity run by women and providing assistance such as food parcels, educational sponsorship and home improvements for Bahraini women and children.
