Gulf Weekly Trueblood claims social competition

Philip Trueblood’s majestic 47 points brought him victory in the Awali Golf Club’s (AGC) New Year 18 hole Social Stableford competition.

The desert course saw 28 intrepid golfers from the club brave the heat, humidity and lack of a cooling wind, with all but one completing the course before retiring to the 19th hole for the air-conditioned cover, drinks, supper and prize presentations.

The competition was also open to non-handicappers in accordance with the AGC’s active efforts to encourage new players to gain experience by competing as much as possible with handicapped members.

Prizes were awarded to the top five players as well as to the ‘nearest the pin’ on the 4th (ladies), 8th, & 14th and the longest drive on the 18th.

Following Trueblood were Serwin Rampersad (44) in second, Onny Martin (42) third, Vidhu Mittal (40) fourth and Ali Al Kowari (39) in fifth.

Nearest the pin successes went to Pete Rogers and Clive Turpin with club captain Bill Scarth showing his skill with the longest drive on the 18th.

A special mention should be made of young Lee Mcilear, who was recently awarded his club handicap at the age of nine and finished in the Top 20.

There seemed to be a palpable sense of relief among some of the winners when the captain confirmed that the competition was non-qualifying for handicap purposes!
