Al Riwaq Art Space is proud to announce the first edition of artBahrain/The Nest Annual Art Prize under the patronage of Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, founder of ArtBahrain non-profit art organisation.

We would like to invite artists living and working in the region to submit proposals of their artwork, suitable for an outdoor installation, to be unveiled during The Nest 2015.

We hope you will take this opportunity to set the standards for Bahraini art and design, by visually communicating your conception of the local identity and representing Bahrain on a local platform.

All proposals will be thoughtfully considered by our committee, and 10 semi-finalists will be selected to move forward onto the next stage.

The semi-finalists will have the opportunity to workshop their designs with the curatorial team at Al Riwaq Space, benefitting from our studio space and from professional guidance with choosing materials and resources for their work.

Two will be selected to have their artworks displayed and exhibited at The Nest 2015 and receive cash prizes. The winner will receive BD500, a public exhibition of their artwork at The Nest and a competitive international residency. Second place will receive BD250 and a public exhibition of their artwork at The Nest.

We at Al Riwaq Art Space believe in supporting emerging artists and offering opportunities for the advancement of visual arts culture. We would encourage all artists to challenge themselves by taking advantage of this opportunity to gain visibility and professionalise their artistic practice in a safe space.

We are anticipating work of a very high standard and look forward to receiving proposals in due course.

The British Club in Mahooz, one of the most popular social clubs for expatriates, was founded in 1935. To celebrate this milestone the club will be holding a Big Birthday weekend of very special events.

The celebrations will commence tomorrow with a Black Tie dinner to be held poolside from 7.30pm. There’ll be live music, magic show and a fun photo booth.

This promises to be a very special, glamorous event and members and their guests are encouraged to get in the spirit and wear 1930s attire (The Prohibition era could be the inspiration), alternatively Black Tie, lounge suits or national dress should be worn. Tickets are on sale from reception – only BD5 for members, BD10 for guests including buffet dinner and a welcome drink.

On Friday there’ll be live music from 6pm with the Tax Dodgers, playing a mixture of rock, blues and pop, ranging from The Doors to Amy Winehouse. This is free for members – the normal entry fee of BD2 will apply for members’ guests.

The weekend will conclude on Saturday with a Big Birthday Party from 4pm, with traditional party food and games for all the family, including a Giant Pass the Parcel, Simon Says, Tug of War, etc. The party is free, but members who wish to attend are asked to register first with reception today. More information may be obtained by calling 17728245.
