Chris Pringle came out on top at the Awali Golf Club’s first non-handicap competition of the 2015/16 season on Saturday, despite a mishap in the rough along the 5th which saw his club come off worse after contact with a tree.

The Awali Golf Club encourages new golfers to develop their playing skills, to learn the rules and etiquette of golf, and to play as much as possible in competition-like conditions as they strive to gain their handicaps.

This weekend’s 9-hole competition was organised by Dave Bailey who gave the 10 players tips on how to speed up the pace of play, something which is critical to being able to complete the nine holes in around two hours. Groups of players then tee’d-off, each accompanied by a handicapped member available to offer advice during play.

Despite the odd playing mat being left behind on the desert fairway, a couple of air-shots, a few wayward strikes, and an iron which came off worse after contact with a tree, the overall level of play was actually very good and some high Stableford scores were recorded with a couple of golfers able to put in cards which will count towards their eventual handicaps.

Prizes were awarded to the top three players – 1st Chris Pringle, 2nd Phil Morrison, 3rd Andrzej Jopek – by Bailey.

The next non-handicappers competition will be held at the end of November.
