YOUNG aspiring runners in Bahrain are being urged to put their talents to the test in a series of races starting this Saturday at the Bahrain National Stadium track.

The Bahrain Athletics Association (BAA) is looking for young talent on the island to form the next National Squad and selected athletes will compete in events scheduled under the IAAF calendar.

These weekly sessions will offer runners the chance to get their names on the Bahrain national ranking list and improve their times over the year. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the season.

GulfWeekly columnist and UK athletics coach Andy Price, who already works with a group of talented young athletes in Bahrain, said: “The aim is to identify and nurture young talent on the island. The races will be available to all but will be seeded after the first month and the BAA will publish a ranking list after each event with the aim of selecting individuals to represent Bahrain next year.

“We are hoping to get as many young runners as possible along to run a timed 60m and / or 800m for Under 13s and then a mix of 800m / 1500m / 3000m for U15s to over 17s.

“The event will take place on Saturday at the National Stadium in Isa Town – no need to register; just turn up.”

The action starts at 5.30pm.
