BEING a passionate movie lover I always wanted to document my own films and have my name on something but I was quick to dismiss the thought as idle daydreaming. That was, until I was approached by my auntie to take part in a workshop for Chocolate Films.

I took part in a project called ‘1,000 Londoners’ which explored the working-class people of England’s capital city. We made a small documentary to raise awareness of the feats of ordinary folk.

I managed to direct my own group of inspiring filmmakers whilst working with high-quality equipment.

I learned loads of new skills and best of all the course offered me an insight into the industry and the carrot of the possibility of applying for a part-time job once I finished my degree.

Now, if we look at the popularity of film at this moment in time, getting a position in the industry is almost as unlikely as winning a lottery. And, after a while of giving up, I finally realised that around every corner is an open door. We just need to know where to look and be brave enough to step through it.

Albeit, Bahrain is more difficult a place to gain work experience, however, we probably don’t appreciate how everywhere we go and everyone we meet could lead to an opportunity that could take us on the first step to the top.

Now, for all those struggling with examinations at the moment, the old adage still remains true too … it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Good luck everyone!
