Birthing ball

It always saddens me how much of the joy has been sucked out of the birthing experience. Mothers-to-be go into labour scared and apprehensive, and as a result end up feeling exhausted, traumatised and frustrated.

But the birthing ball (also known as a sports ball or fitness ball) can change that. Sitting on a birthing ball during labour relieves a lot of the pain and is a much better alternative to the ‘stranded beetle’ position that we see in the movies. Laying on your back during labour presses on all the nerve endings, which makes the experience more painful and restricted.

Sitting on a birthing ball, however, opens up the pelvis and relieves pressure off the sacrum to help open up the area and relax the muscles.

Mothers can start sitting on the birthing ball throughout their pregnancies in order to prepare the pelvis and relieve pressure. During labour, there are many positions that mothers can use for better results. Look it up and experiment; upright birthing allows gravity to be on your side. You have choices; educate yourself and speak up.
