Gulf Weekly Al Hashel bags cup and medals

In difficult conditions of high winds and rising sand, Ebrahim Al Hashel won the Russell Cup for the best gross score over the two days’ play at the Awali Golf Club (AGC) as well as the medals on each occasion.

Young Ahmed Mohammed won the Memorial Trophy for the best net score over the two days and was also the Russell Cup runner-up.

The Russell Cup for the best aggregate gross score over two days has been presented since at least 1940 and recent evidence has been uncovered that may date it back to 1935 which, if substantiated, could possibly make this competition the longest-running in the Gulf.

The Memorial Trophy for the best aggregate net score was originally known as the Hayward Memorial Trophy and was first played for in early 1959 to commemorate the deaths of two active members of AGC who were killed in a plane crash in October 1957.

The Russell Cup and the Memorial Trophy were subsequently combined into a single competition in the 1978/79 season and sponsored by Bapco. Kerry Diaper was tournament director.

Club Captain Bill Scarth gave special thanks and a fond farewell to Graham and Ann Tole who are leaving Bahrain after many years. Mark Hodgkinson from Bapco gave away the prizes.

Results:
Russell Cup – 1st Ebrahim Al Hashel (gross 150), 2nd Ahmed Mohammed (154), 3rd. Diab S Al Noaimi (155).
Memorial Trophy – 1st Ahmed Mohammed (net 130), 2nd Nevil Malao (132), 3rd Serwin Rampersad (135).
Medals: Days 1 & 2 – Ebrahim Al Hashel.
