Love is in the air, or is it? Perhaps you are a smug singleton or half of a contented couple, whichever you are; there is no escaping the lure of St Valentine’s Day on February 14.

Of course, this can be a tense time for many. Our men folk are under a tremendous amount of pressure to dig deep and delve into their romantic souls that are generally kept locked up the remainder of the year.

Women can be left disappointed when their romantic expectations are vastly different to those of their partners. Many of us drop major hints leading up to the big day which undoubtedly infuriates the male of the species!

Take ‘the husband’, for instance, for years he has blamed his loathing of St Valentine’s Day on ‘commercialisation overload’ that he refuses to be a part of.

I retaliate with ‘romance doesn’t have to cost a thing,’ which, of course, is true … but flowers would be nice. I’d be pushing my luck by even thinking of a piece of sparkly jewellery.

Maybe, I will surreptitiously leave today’s Fashion Weekly column open or the Leisure Guide with the city hotels and restaurants offering romantic dinners and getaways across Bahrain.

Actually, between you and me, my cunning plan this St Valentine’s Day is to book a surprise romantic dinner with ‘the husband’ … with me as his date.

Editor’s note: Or win a meal-for-two in our competition on Page 9!
