The takeaway

How the club-head moves away from the ball during the first 14 inches going back has a big effect on the following sequence of movements through the swing.

A takeaway that is fast, jerky or starting on the wrong line has to be compensated for and generally leads to inconsistent shots.

On the range try placing two balls down. The first is in front of the club face and is to be hit and the other behind the club head.

As you take the club back, study how far the ball rolls and also the direction. If the speed is good, the ball should move no more than a couple of feet, and if the direction is good, the ball should roll away directly behind the target line.
