I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to Kristian Harrison for his recent front page article on International ‘Read To Me’ Day.

It was a write-up for a very noble cause and that GulfWeekly made it a cover story just goes on to mark the sensible journalism it practises.

But this thank you note goes on to tell a tale of the difference it made to lives of many children who attended the International ‘Read To Me’ Day event organised by Discover Islam (DI) at its Manama branch.

Kristian’s story appeared on Wednesday and within a span of two days, DI put up an event with the help of its dedicated volunteers which turned out to be a family-centric activity.

Children from The British School of Bahrain, Al Manar School, Al Wisam School, Ibn Al Haytam Islamic School, The Indian School and The New Indian School attended. Also, in attendance were tiny tots from Kidz World and Early Learning Kindergarten.

The eventful day began with reading sessions in English and Arabic. This was followed by literary games and activities, a book stall set up by Knowledge Nectar bookshop, giveaways and refreshments.

The participants were a mix of ages, from teens and tweens, to younger kids, and our youngest little guest being just close to five-months old.

Muhammad Zuhair, manager outreach at DI, said: “Reading is a dying habit and we at DI always support initiatives that are literacy-centric. I am glad that this beautiful event touched the lives of so many children.”

Conclusively, it was an amazing day for a worthy cause. Our only regret being that Kristian Harrison could not be there in person, who so many people wanted to meet and thank.

This is in reference to the published letter from Ms Cooper in last week’s issue of GulfWeekly.

Thank you for mentioning in the ‘Editor’s note’ that the rugby club is offering space for art shows. I recall we have discussed this and would like to confirm that this offer is still available.

BRFC (Bahrain ‎Rugby Football Club) is a community and sporting club with 850 family and 160 single memberships taking the total number of people using the club to approximately 2,500 to 3,000.

I would like to invite Ms Cooper to visit our club and check out if our facilities are suitable to be used for an art exhibition.

You never know‎, we may learn something from each other?

I enjoyed reading Mai Al Khatib-Camille’s article on the new occupants of the British Embassy in last week’s issue but I must take you to task about describing former ambassador Iain Lindsay’s wife, Bridget, as ‘outspoken and formidable’.

It would have been more apt to have described her as ‘friendly and fair’ and I so enjoyed her weekly column in GulfWeekly. Don’t worry Bridget; as one friend quite rightly remarked, you were up there with the best of ambassador wives. You kept it ‘real’ and that is why so many people miss you both.
