Tips for pet lovers

Question: How do we stop our cat from scratching furniture?

Answer: The first thing to understand is that you cannot stop your cat from scratching. However, you can train it to scratch appropriate items instead of your furniture or other pieces of property. To help accomplish this, here are some more tips (continued from last week):
Use a water bottle or loud noise to startle your cat when scratching.

When you see your cat clawing, spraying it with a water bottle can be effective because the cat will associate scratching that particular item with an unpleasant sensation. You can also try making a loud noise. However, never use physical discipline because it will only cause your cat to become fearful or aggressive, and this will do nothing for maintaining the bond with your beloved pet.

Never declaw your cat.

Many people consider declawing a cat to protect property. However, this practice is considered to be inhumane and is illegal in many countries. Declawing the cat can cause permanent pain and behavioural problems. It also leaves the cat without defences if it should ever go outside. Plastic nail caps are a safe, less cruel alternative.
