Gulf Weekly Write to the editor

I would like to thank you very much for the excellent article that you wrote about my volunteering with refugees in Greece that highlighted the work of Nurture Project International (NPI).

I would also like to give my sincere thanks for the generous donations that I have received from the people of Bahrain for NPI. Although I am paying all the costs of volunteering myself, NPI is in constant need of funds to provide services and essential supplies for the mothers and babies in the refugee camps. So far I have raised almost $3,000 online and from donations in person.

I have been able to purchase a much-needed set of digital baby scales to take with me, part of a very generous donation from my yoga teacher, Samantha de Zoysa, who teaches classes for charities in Bahrain and overseas. Additionally, Pam Kamal of First Aid Box has very kindly provided a fully-stocked first aid kit for the NPI centre on the camp.

I feel I am taking a huge amount of empathy and goodwill from all the citizens and residents of Bahrain to the families who find themselves stranded in Eko refugee camp, thank you all again.

Vicky Honar, Saar.

As some of you may have read on Facebook, cruelty to animals seems to be on the increase here in the kingdom with awful illustrated stories of little puppies being beaten to death and others being burned alive. I just signed a petition which simply reads: ‘Bahrain Government: Stop Animal Abuse. Stop Dog Fighting and Gambling. Stop Illegal Breeding. Stop importing Huskies and Pitbulls.’ and wanted to see if your readers could help by adding their names to it.

Our goal is to reach 5,000 signatures and we need more support. You can read more and sign the petition by visiting: https://goo.gl/9UzYv9

Please also share with your other animal-loving friends. Thanks!

Susan D. Cook, Bahrain.
