Bahrain Select powered to victory against DHL in a highly-entertaining encounter for the annual memorial trophy staged at the Bahrain Rugby Football Club in Janabiya.

Last Thursday evening’s fixture was a much more tightly-fought affair than in 2015 when the Bahrain team dominated on the park.

Bahrain took an early lead in the first quarter 19-7 and that score remained the same up until half-time.

DHL Barbarians, featuring players travelling to take part from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, came back into the game in the third quarter with a few superb tries, only for the Bahrain Select to pull away at the end and eventually roll out 41-28 winners.

Currently in its eighth year, DHL’s annual memorial game pays tribute to the logistics company’s employees who lost their lives whilst working in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2008, as highlighted in GulfWeekly.

Around BD5,000 was raised this year to be shared by the RIA School for Autistic Children, the BSPCA, the Bahrain Red Crescent Society, The Christian Cemetery in Salmabad and Tony ‘The Dog Father’ Waters who runs a rescue shelter for animals in Saar.
