Al Riwaq Art Space is hosting a solo exhibition of Latifa Al Shakar’s work, titled ‘Memoirs of Damascus’. Proceeds of this exhibition will be forwarded to the charity Alphabet Alternative Education, which aids the Syrian crisis by creating initiatives to improve literacy among children.

The 10th Middle East Refining and Petrochemicals Conference and Exhibition will take place until tomorrow at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Sanabis.

Thursday (September 29)
The Bahrain Rugby Football Club in Janabiya is celebrating a Great British Weekend in honour of 200 years of British-Bahraini relations.

Events kick off with a Great British quiz night with curry tonight from 7.30pm. Entry costs BD5 and teams must consist of no more than six people.

On Friday at 11am, there will be stalls celebrating the theme in the main sports hall, while at 2pm a darts and cricket tournament will take place.

A 20-piece band from St Christopher’s School will then perform at 3pm, followed by afternoon tea in Manos’ Restaurant until 5pm.

A performance by local band The Tax Dodgers will conclude the weekend at 8pm.

Bahrain Financial Harbour is continuing its ‘Art at The Harbour’ series, in which artists are given the opportunity to exhibit their artwork at Harbour Tower West for one month and then Harbour Tower East for another month. The Lost Paradise of Dilmun will mark its ninth anniversary with a big splash day of fun on Friday.

A spectacle of music, beats and comedy, featuring a one-of-a-kind variety show of live performances will be staged at the waterpark’s massive wave pool beach area.

Special guests includes Bahrain’s upbeat Latino band, Saudi comedy act Sheyaab, Saudi Khaleeji singers Fahad Khalid, backed up by a traditional Khaleeji band.

Al Areen Palace & Spa, in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy, will host a week-long food festival featuring Indonesian cuisine from October 14-21 at its Keizo outlet.

The menu for the festival, designed by Executive Sous Chef Janardan Das, will feature popular Indonesian dishes like Nasi Goreng, Beef Rendang, and desserts like Fried Banana with Chocolate Dip and Es Cendol (Shaved Ice with Rice Flour Dumpling).

As part of the food festival, there will be an Angklung performance (a traditional musical instrument made from bamboo) and an Indonesian dance.

Chilman Arisman, the Indonesian ambassador to Bahrain, pictured above with hotel executives and VIPs, said: “Indonesia is currently focused on developing Indonesian cuisine and promoting it to the international world. With the growing recognition of Indonesian cuisine in Bahrain, we are delighted to hold this event at Al Areen.”

As part of the festival, the Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park will have an ‘Indonesian Community Day’ on October 15 where all Indonesian nationals in Bahrain will receive a 50 per cent discount on entry tickets.

The festival will be held at Keizo from 7pm-11pm every evening for dinner. Guests will have the option of choosing a set menu priced at BD12++ per person or opting for an a la carte menu.

Colourful crafts are currently being showcased at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre as part of the Moroccan Bahraini Handicraft Week with the aim of preserving the North African country’s rich heritage.

The event also helps promote the strong relations between the two nations and Sunday’s launch was attended by His Excellency Shaikh Khaled bin Humood Al Khalifa, the chief executive officer of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), the Moroccan Ambassador to Bahrain Ahmed Rashid Khatabi, the Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani and Fatema Marouane, the Kingdom of Morocco Minister of Handicrafts, Social and Solidarity Economy.

Shaikh Khaled said: “The Moroccan Bahraini Handicrafts Week aims to provide craftsmen from both Bahrain and Morocco the opportunity to exchange expertise and create integrated products representing both cultures.”

The exhibition features 22 Bahraini and 13 Moroccan artisans displaying a range of crafts including jewellery, calligraphic images, leather goods and woven products. There are also stalls featuring scented oils, wooden boxes and figurines, pottery, traditional tea pots, antiques and musical instruments.

Moroccan craftsman Dennouch Mustapha, owner of Art & Décor in Marrakech, said: “I have been working in this trade for the past 31 years and am happy to be displaying my chess boards, jewellery boxes, salad bowls and other wooden products in Bahrain. This event is beautiful and I really hope it gives people an insight about our culture.”

The event runs until Saturday, will also include a series of handicrafts workshops, traditional music shows, a Moroccan cooking show, a fashion show for folkloric Moroccan costumes and a Moroccan henna design section.

The exhibition was organised by BTEA in collaboration with the Moroccan ‘La Maison de l’Artisan’.

Entry tickets cost 500 fils and the event is open to the public from 10am-1pm and 4pm-10pm.
