Awali Golf Club member Ismail Khonji has joined the ranks of the club’s sponsors by hosting the first Ismail Khonji Associates (IKA) Greensomes last Friday.

The competition, played in unusually hot and humid conditions for mid November, witnessed another week of super high scoring with two pairs of players on 40 points losing on count back for 6th place which would usually be sufficient points to win outright on other days.

The Greensomes format is based on drawn pairs, with each team member teeing off. The pair select the best placed ball and from there play alternate shots until the ball is holed. The team’s handicap is calculated by taking 60 per cent of the lower handicap and adding it to 40 per cent of the higher handicap, the Stableford scoring system is then used to tally up the points.

In first place were Jasper Meinema & Ahmed Al Noaimi with an outstanding 46 points; 2nd Kwang B Kim & Richard Pawson - 43 points; 3rd Sun Kyu Kwak & Tony Robinson - 42 points; 4th Jeffrey Barrett & Alan Staunton - 41 points; 5th Mubarak S Sultan & Pete Rogers - 41 points and 6th Floris Brand & Paul McLean – 40 points.

Losing on count back for 6th place were Sultan Ahmed & Kerry Diaper and also A.R. Amin & Tim Beynon.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Adnan Al Sowaidi for hole 4 and Phil Trueblood for hole 12. The prizes were presented by Ismail Khonji and club vice-captain Steve Brown.
