In just nine days our planet will have completed yet another rotation around the Sun.

Yes, we’ve reached that time of the year. Cue the insane frenzy and self-deluding ‘resolutions’ to change. I don’t mean to be a stooge, but besides the heavily-discounted shopping I’ve never seen the appeal in New Year’s celebrations.

I do have to admit, the final countdown to the New Year is highly exciting but besides that what’s so unique about the January 1? Does a new year really signify a new you? I personally don’t see how people can suddenly alter over the course of one day.

If, for example, one is trying to quit their smoking habit, why must they wait until New Year’s Day to begin? I’ve been asking myself that question over the course of this week and honestly can’t find a proper answer as to why people commit themselves to these ‘New Year’s resolutions’.

There is no denying that the intention behind these resolutions is amazing but why not just try changing today? I did, however, come across an interesting video on my Facebook newsfeed in which two teenagers rapped about why 2016 has been the ‘worst year ever’.

Besides being highly entertaining, many points resonated with me. It does seem 2016 has unleashed a celebrity curse with many beloved icons like Prince and David Bowie sadly passing away. We’ve also seen horrific terrorist attacks across the world from Dhaka to Orlando.

We’ve had exploding phones, Brexit and Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidency race. Oh, and for all the prepubescent’s out there, this year has been particularly bad what with One Direction and Fifth Harmony potentially over for good.

The struggles are definitely real. But in all seriousness, 2016 has not been a great year globally. Perhaps I can make an exception and make a general resolution: pray for the stability of this planet on a daily basis. Because if not having One Direction is really some people’s biggest concern, I am scared.
