The year is drawing to an end and it can be a time for reflection on the events of 2016 both globally and in our personal lives.

It has shown us a year of international unrest, major political changes and unfathomable suffering. But, we mustn’t forget the good stuff and that is how I’d like to fill my last column of 2016 - on a positive note because I like to think of myself as a cup half full kind-of-girl! Earlier in the year, the world’s largest solar plant was switched on in Morocco and is on target to power one million homes.

In March, astronaut Scott Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko safely land back on earth after 340 days in space. Barack Obama visited Cuba and he is the first US President to visit since 1928. Leicester City won the English Premier League title, starting the season at 5000 - 1 odds.

Pokémon Go took the world by storm with their real-world game. July saw Andy Murray beating Milos Raonic to take the Men’s Wimbledon tennis title. More women won major political roles with Rome electing its first female Mayor Virginia Raggi, Theresa May became the Prime Minister of the UK and Yuriko Koike is the first woman to be elected Tokyo Governor.

The 31st Summer Olympics in Brazil were a success even with the Zika virus debate. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, and his wife Priscilla, pledged $3 billion to medical research. After months of protests by The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the US army decides it will not allow the oil pipeline to be laid in North Dakota.

Then of course Donald Trump was formally elected as president of the United States (did that really happen?) Until next year may I wish you all ‘A guid new year to ane an’ a’!
