With temperatures in the kingdom soaring close to 50 degrees Celsius, flooding is the last thing you’d expect to see in a major residential area in July, writes Kristian Harrison.
However, that is precisely what has happened in Saar as a mysterious lake has appeared on Avenue 35, just outside Saar Sports Club.
One local resident, Sarah Clarke, has expressed her concern at the development. She said: “I noticed the body of water forming last week, and several days later it had expanded and continues to do so. With how hot the weather is and how quickly water evaporates, there must be gallons of water flowing out for it to grow in size like it has.”
The lake’s current position is restricting access to the sports centre and its neighbouring housing facilities. It has also creeped onto the road, causing issues for motorists and potentially leaving potholes on what is one of the busiest traffic lanes in the area.
It is believed that a burst water pipe is to blame, but when GulfWeekly asked the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry for comment, the newspaper was told that ‘no complaint had been received’ and that it would launch an investigation.
