People from across all walks of life stepped out in full force on Friday to participate in a 17th annual walkathon in support of cancer-suffering patients and research into finding a cure for the disease.

More than 2,000 families and friends along with individuals from different schools, universities, businesses and hotels joined the 3.8km trek on Friday afternoon around the promenade starting from the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay to show their support dressed in white and black shirts and pink ribbons.

A team of 20 from Swiss-Belhotel Seef Bahrain were among those putting their best foot forward in support of the event to support Bahrain Cancer Society.

Herve Peyre, the hotel’s general manager, said: “Our team has been participating in the Bahrain Cancer Society walkathon every year since 2015.

“We do this in honour of breast cancer awareness month and as members of the community.

“It’s our way to show support and to help raise awareness and funds for cancer research and to  help contribute to a healthier life for all of us. This is one of the ways we can give back to the community.”

Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh and Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf were also present at the walkathon.

Around BD18,000 raised from the event will be used to support victims of cancer and purchase medical equipment to be donated to Salmaniya Medical Complex and local health centres for treatment and early diagnosis.

The Bahrain Cancer Society, which was established in 1989 as a voluntary non-profitable organisation, has been working towards providing education and information to the public about the causes and treatment of cancer as well as ways to help prevent it.

The society has also been supporting relevant research and providing training for people participating in the field of cancer prevention.
