Youth Talk

December is synonymous with applications for almost all students in their last year of school! I too have been wound up in university rankings, entry requirements, SATs and school. It is during one of these moments of being glued to the laptop screen that I found a rather important bit of information- which is the importance of social media. Now, to those who may have read my earlier articles or may know me personally might just be thinking: “Oh, so Saamia has finally caught up with the times!”

Well, probably, or maybe I have furthered a tangent. Recent research advises that for being a strong prospective job candidate, having a good social media profile is important. This came to me as a shock as I had always thought that the professional world appreciated somebody as far away from stereotypical time wasting portals like Facebook, Instagram etc. as possible. But, it seems like LinkedIn is no longer the only way you can make your profile work for you in the world of jobs.

This is an important bit of information for developing social media profiles for us teens (and even adults) as our likes, dislikes, political, religious and social views, amongst other things can easily be inferred through social networks. This means, one should refrain from using abusive language, posting strong political views and anything of the sort because all of this contributes to your personal brand. Let me just clarify though, I am not saying that this should be the only reason to keep personal views to oneself as I do believe that in any case, these are common etiquettes.

It’s a delicate path that has been chosen to tread. Are Game of Thrones memes fine? Can I share this Physics hack? What about the Hitler dubbed version of a difficult exam?

Well, at least for once, we will think twice before sharing on social media something we have kind of forgotten in the last few years.
