I have been noticing this for a while now. Whenever I hit a highway, I rootle around to find the board that displays the speed limit. And, very rarely must I have driven below that speed limit.
Now, even though this ensures I reach places faster, I have realised that these days we are all rushing towards our destination. We have started assuming that every action that we do in our life is a task. A task that we must finish at the earliest, in the best possible way, and our brains have evolved to undertake the Gantt chart constructions to accommodate everything.
It is not about the journey anymore, rather, it is about each milestone and reaching all the thought-of nodes in life.
Sometimes, the voyage is far more important than where you reach but in today’s fast-paced life, this doesn’t seem to pan out.
Even when I am going out with my family, it is a sort of checklist in my brain - café, dinner, drive. And then, instead of enjoying my time at dinner or having a pleasant drive, I am knocking off these three from the checklist.
I am sure that a lot of people do this. Life has become far more hectic now and people are (and not incorrectly) very achievement-driven (reaching destinations) but one must realise that happiness doesn’t require big things to happen.
Happiness all depends on where you derive it from.
