A multi-award-winning restaurant and a popular hypermarket group are preparing to offer the kingdom’s residents a plethora of traditional Thai activities and a feast of flavoursome fare.
The annual food and cultural extravaganza which starts on Saturday and runs until April 28 and promotes the Far East Asian nation’s cuisine, tradition, arts and handicrafts, will be held at the The Royal Thai restaurant at the Gulf Hotel, Bahrain and at Lulu Hypermarket in Juffair Mall.
On Saturday and Sunday, a number of traditional Thai performances, umbrella painting, fruit carving and more will take place at the store, fresh from its British Week celebrations, while on Monday a number of dignitaries and officials will attend a cultural market and musical performances at the Gulf Hotel’s Convention Centre.
From Tuesday until April 28, the Royal Thai will be presenting a special Sawasdee Thailand Festival buffet for guests to enjoy the country’s cuisine. As highlighted in GulfWeekly, the restaurant was judged at the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Food & Travel Bahrain Awards as the ‘best’ Thai restaurant in the kingdom.
Thailand’s ambassador to Bahrain, Thanis Na Songkhla, believes the event will be a great way to mark his arrival on the island, having only taken up his post a week ago. He said: “I think this is a wonderful opportunity for Thailand to once again present our culture to the people of Bahrain and the expat community.
“There are many things we want to show, since Bahrain is a very close friend of Thailand and we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of close diplomatic relations this year.
“This is our way of showing appreciation to Bahrain, especially as so many living here visit Thailand every year!
“Our country has a very long and rich history and this is a unique way we can present it to the people.”
The event is being sponsored by Sri Lankan Airlines, who are flying in the group of Thai dancers and musicians, Lulu Hypermarket and the Thai Club Bahrain.
The Royal Thai restaurant will be presenting a special buffet cooked up by Executive Chef Tawatchai Chuto, who helped launch the restaurant 15 years ago. Thai cooking places emphasis on lightly-prepared dishes with strong aromatic components and a spicy edge, as its popularity has grown across Bahrain.
The kitchen maestro said: “We’ll be doing something different this year, offering a spread which will encompass the entire spectrum of Thai food.
“It will cater for Thai visitors but also to newcomers who may want to try an introduction to our cuisine. I’ll make sure the spice in some of the dishes is mild enough not to scare them off!
“Thai food encompasses so many flavours and tastes, and we’ll have a wide selection to reflect this, including items not usually on our menu.”
