Manama’s Central Market is set to be spruced up and made squeaky clean after leading hypermarket chain Lulu teamed up with international consumer goods company Unilever to tidy up the area.

The Central Market is half-a-kilometre long and houses three public markets selling seafood, meat, fruits and vegetables.

Cleaning operations began with the fish market earlier this week, with the meat market to follow today and the vegetable market on Tuesday.

Cleaning of these facilities will be carried out by an agency under the supervision of the Bahrain Municipality using Unilever brands exclusively.

Dannyal bin Saeed, country manager of Unilever Bahrain, said: “This idea was based on our global plan of improving living conditions and the health and wellbeing of billions worldwide.

“This activity underlines our commitment: we want clean homes and clean cities to provide a safer, cleaner Bahrain for future generations.”

The ‘clean home, clean city’ initiative was launched on Sunday with a cake-cutting ceremony at Lulu’s branch in Hidd with Cem T Yuksel, managing director of Unilever Gulf,  Juzer Rupawala, director Lulu Hypermarket Bahrain & Egypt, and other senior company representatives, joined by Amin El Sharkawl, the United Nations’ resident coordinator.

Unilever is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of iconic home care brands such as Jif cleaners, Lux dish wash, OMO laundry detergent and Comfort fabric conditioners, used by millions of households across 50 countries.

Its partnership with the popular store continues. Anyone spending BD3 or more on any of the brands in a Lulu Hypermarket will receive a package containing free cleaning samples provided by Unilever.

The operation was proposed by Unilever, which comes as part of the company’s Sustainable Living Plan. This aims to help more than a billion people take action to improve their health and well-being by 2020, halve the environmental impact of its products by 2030, and enhance the livelihoods of millions by 2020.
