BIG-HITTING schoolboy Ronan Smith helped his school secure the runner’s-up prize in a regional golf competition and picked up prestigious individual accolades for his performance.

The St Christopher’s School team, sponsored by Audi, accompanied by head of geography Barry Hobday, travelled to Dubai recently for the third annual British Schools in the Middle East Golf Tournament.

The event was held at the magnificent Trump International over 36 holes and played in beautiful weather.

The captain, Ronan Smith, had the lowest Gross St Chris Score of 154 whilst Sebastian Woodrow had the largest turnaround scoring 86 on Day 1 and a magnificent 69 on Day 2 which was the lowest score of the whole tournament.

In Division 2, Alexandre Hopman-Ruh claimed first place with a combined 78 Stableford points with Nick Scerri finishing second with 75pts. Smith, 17, also won the longest drive prize with a monster 320-yard beauty.

Finally, Hobday claimed the impromptu Staff Competition winning by 1 shot in a fiercely fought battle on the Par 3 course although he had to eat humble pie as the school’s main contest was won by Dubai English Speaking College where his brother David is head of economics.

The fourth edition is scheduled to be held at Bahrain’s Royal Golf Club next year.
