THE 16th edition of the Spring of Culture festival, which ends on March 31, continues this week with a range of artistic and musical talents taking the stage, in addition to lectures and workshops.
The popular festival is being organised by Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (Baca), Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research and Al Dana Amphitheatre, in co-operation with Al Riwaq Art Space and Albareh Art Gallery.

The exhibition, A hundred years later … celebrating the foundation of Annadi Al Adabi, tonight celebrates one of the most important cultural clubs which served as the first incubator for literary and cultural activity in Bahrain at the beginning of the last century. The expo, which ends on April 13, highlights the role of the club and its founders, made up of writers, poets and pioneers of education.

There is a lecture tonight by Professor Dr Albert De Roeck on scientific co-operation between CERN and the Research Centre for Elementary Particle Physics, Milliqan Experiment Project. The senior research scientist and staff member at CERN has played a significant role in the preparation of one of the experiments at the LHC: the Compact Muon Solenoid.

There is a lecture tomorrow by Dr Alaa El Habashi about heritage and sustainable development experiences. His research and practices aim to respect the specificities of local history and traditions. He conducted many conservation projects in the Arab world and assisted in registering, managing and evaluating World Heritage sites.

Tomorrow, people will be serenaded by the Mohammed bin Faris band, which will feature festive melodies and farewell ballads. The band performs every Thursday and the last show will be held on March 31.

Tomorrow, A Night of Arabic Classic Films: Between Heaven and Earth (1959), will be featured. The Egyptian movie is by Naguib Mahfouz, starring Hind Rostom, Abdel Salam Al Nabulsi, Abdel Moneim Ibrahim and Mahmoud El Meligy. It revolves around the breakdown of an electric elevator in a Cairo neighbourhood building with its passengers, metaphorically, between heaven and earth.

Tomorrow and Friday, Raya and Sakina will be showcased in collaboration with the Egyptian Embassy in Bahrain. This contemporary performance features the story of two popular figures across Egypt and the Arab world. Raya and Sakina are two personalities that have roused contradictory opinions as some consider them thugs while others see them as heroes in the face of colonialism. This production highlights another perspective of these characters through psychological analysis as well as research on the economic and cultural conditions of the time, reflecting the intertwining, interferences and struggles of the human psyche in the form of modern dance.

l The Qal’at Al Bahrain Site Museum is organising a trip to the Hadhra tomorrow, where fishing traps are laid out at sea, and to search for oysters along the coastline. Participants will learn about the making of traditional fisheries from natural materials in the surrounding area. Registration is required at www.culture.gov.bh and fees apply.

‘Approaching Learning: A Symposium’ will be held on Friday and Saturday. It will feature conversations on different topics and issues of concern. Registration is required through Al Riwaq Art Space’s website.

The Philharmonia Orchestra from the UK aims to charm all classical musical lovers on Friday with their selection of timeless masterpieces by Jean Sibelius, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Ludwig van Beethoven. The concert is led by Finnish Maestro Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Bahraini Maestro Major General Dr Mubarak Najem, who is joining the orchestra with two musical pieces.

The Pearling Path project’s multi-storey car park built in Muharraq and designed by architect Christian Kerez will be opened on March 26.

The Shabab Al Hidd Band will showcase their folkloric songs and dances on Saturday including Al-Ardhah, Al-Fjiri, Al-Sout, Daq Al-Hab, and other traditional arts, for all to enjoy.

There is a lecture on Monday by Kuwaiti writer Ibrahim Al Mulaifi on the challenges of the digital world. He has served as editor-in-chief of Al-Arabi magazine since 2019.
