HUNGRY for adventure, photographer Sara Sami embarked on a trek to Everest Base Camp in a bid to capture her journey and the mountain’s marvellous beauty.

The 36-year-old Bahraini freelance graphic designer put her mind and body through a series of challenges to raise the Bahraini flag high in the Himalayas, at an altitude of 5,364m above the sea level.

“I’m glad I decided to go on the 12-day expedition because you never know how much your body can handle until you push the limits,” said Sara from East Riffa, who went with a fellow travel addict and shutterbug Preetha Gopinath, 39.

“I wanted to prove that if I put my mind to something, I can do it, no matter how tough the situation is.

“I also wanted to capture the beautiful Himalayan mountains and the night sky. That’s been one of my major passions while travelling. Unfortunately my photographer friend and I didn’t have much luck when it came to clear night skies because of the cloudy weather. I still managed to get some beautiful day shots.”

According to Adventure Pulse trekking company that organised the event, the expedition is for nature lovers. They get to see breath-taking views of some of Nepal’s finest rivers, undisturbed forests and the pristine snow-capped peaks. While it is considered one of the most beautiful treks in the Himalayas, it is also one of the most challenging ... and Sara learnt it the hard way.

She was put on a tough exercise regimen. She worked out five-times-a-week, jogged and walked up and down the stairs carrying a 5kg bag on her back to gain stamina and shoulder strength, which was required for the trip.

“Your mental energy also plays a big role because some days my body just couldn’t push any further during the trip, but my mind kept telling me that I can’t back down,” she added.

“I just had to keep pushing through the pain, no matter how tired or sick I felt due to the high altitude.”
