A travelling exhibition  showcasing the beauty of modern Japanese art will be held at the Bahrain National Museum for creatives to adore, writes Mai Al-Khatib Camille.

The Variation and Autonomy: The Prints of Contemporary Japanese Painters exhibition, will start tomorrow (September 1) at 7pm.

It is being organised by the Japanese Embassy in co-operation with the Japan Foundation and Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities.

It is part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Bahrain.

“This exhibition would be a rare occasion for the visitors to see various aspects of Japanese contemporary art,” said a representative from the embassy’s cultural section.

“These paintings have been developed by many diverse techniques over the years and also possess distinctive characteristics that reassess the history of contemporary Japanese prints.

“The Embassy of Japan hopes you would enjoy this exhibition and it will help you expand your knowledge about various aspects of Japanese culture.”

The exhibition, curated by Kyoji Takizawa of the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts in Tokyo, presents the works of 10 Japanese artists. They explored a wide range of possibilities through prints and expanded the range of expression in contemporary art using the print medium in the 1970s as well as reassessing the existing history of contemporary Japanese prints.

Some of the works on show are from internationally acclaimed artists Yayoi Kusama, Masanari Murai, Toshinobu Onosato, Yasukazu Tabuchi, Natsuyuki Nakanishi, Hitoshi Nakazato, Tomoharu Murakami, Naoyoshi Hikosaka, Kosai Hori and Toeko Tatsuno.

The showcase, which aims to enhance cultural exchanges between the two countries, runs until September 26.
