Intergenerational trauma is unpacked and explored in the latest book by The New York Times bestselling author of A Woman is No Man.

Etaf Rum’s most recent book Evil Eye was released yesterday and explores “the expectations of Palestinian-American women, the meaning of a fulfilling life, and the ways our unresolved pasts affect our presents.”

The book is centred around three generations of a first-generation American immigrant family and picks up when the protagonist Yara is put on probation at work for fighting a racist co-worker.

Her Palestinian mother claims that the provocation and all that has come after it are the result of a family curse, and while Yara doesn’t believe in old superstitions, she finds herself unpacking her strict, often volatile childhood growing up in the US, looking for clues as to why she feels so unfulfilled in a life her mother could only dream of.
